APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:

About the Show

Orcas Island BirdFest celebrates Birds, Arts & Science in the San Juan Islands. The Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce hosts BirdFest and will be held in Eastsound, Washington April 30th – May 3rd, 2015. A major part of the festival is the juried art show and sale, All Things Birds and Beautiful, held at the Victoria Room of the Outlook Inn and in a live online art sale. An exhibition reception with refreshments will be held April 30th from 6 -9 pm at the Outlook Inn.

All Things Birds and Beautiful is part of the annual Orcas Island BirdFest and is dedicated to supporting the arts and science of birds, through the relationship of artistic expression, public education and grassroots scientific endeavors inspired by birds. All Things Birds and Beautiful is an art show and sale celebrating the very best of contemporary creative expression and innovation in diverse media that focuses specifically on birds. All Things Birds and Beautiful art exhibit will be April 30 – May 3, 2015 and the online sale runs the entire month of May. Art will be held for the duration of the online show.

  • Show focus: The art must represent birds in some way. This may include their form, anatomical parts, nests, eggs, etc. All art work must comply with the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, see https://www.fws.gov/migratorybirds/RegulationsPolicies/mbta/mbtintro.html .
  • Original Concept and Design Only. Art works completed in a classroom or workshop setting are not considered original artwork.
  • Accepted work: Any original, including limited edition series, of fine art or fine art craft. Examples may be, but not limited to, wall art, sculpture, and wearable or functional art. Mediums may include, but not limited to, oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, pencil, mixed-media, photography, collage, ceramic, fiber, glass, metal, leather, wood, paper and computer generated.
  • Art must be delivered in exhibition ready condition. Wall art must be professionally framed and/or ready to hang, please use acrylic-type glazing, no glass. Frame must be ready to hang with wire in place, NO “saw tooth” hangers. 3-D work should be easily assembled for display and other art ready for display.
  • Art works must have been completed within the past three (3) years.
  • Maximum Entries: Applicants may submit images of up to three (3) art pieces for the $30 application fee. Each three-dimensional art should have two different image views.
  • All Art must be for sale and reflect the artist's current pricing. No NFS.
  • Artist shall receive 75% of sales made from their art. Orcas Island BirdFest will retain a 25% commission.
  • Any artist who withdraws an entry after acceptance shall not be eligible to enter any Orcas Island BirdFest exhibition for the two succeeding years.
  • Artist is solely responsible for shipping and handling costs to and from the event. A shipping label for return shipping must accompany your accepted artwork. Return shipping label will not be used if the art sells, unless the crate needs to be shipped to the artist. Local drop off and pick up will be scheduled. The Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce will carry insurance during the art show and storage, but the artist assumes all risks during shipping.
  • No price changes can be made after acceptance into the exhibition.

Submission Guidelines

  • Maximum Entries: Applicants may submit images of up to three (3) art pieces for the $30 application fee. Each three-dimensional art should have two different image views.
  • Deadline for accepting artist application is March 10, 2015. Notifications will be posted to your Juried Art Services account on April 3, 2015.
  • Accepted works must arrive in Eastsound, Washington no later than April 27th, 2015
  • Artwork that has arrived at the venue but is not in satisfactory display condition or does not meet requirements of this prospectus may be excluded from the All Things Birds and Beautiful art show and returned to the artist.
  • No refunds will be made on unaccepted entries.

Fees

  • There is a jury fee for this show of $30 for up to three works to be considered and due at time of submission.
  • If accepted, you must include a pre-paid shipping label for return shipping of unsold works if local pick up is not arranged.

Sales Commission

  • A sales commission of 25% is expected by Orcas Island BirdFest for all art works sold at the art show and online sale.
  • All work that is submitted must be for sale.

ACCEPTANCE:
Notification will be sent no later than April 3, 2015. An artist statement is required with your JAS entry. Your artist’s statement will be mounted near your art in the exhibition. Statements are included to provide insight and information for exhibit visitors, docents and art collectors. The artist’s statement uploaded with your entry will be used for the exhibition. A follow up email will be sent to those accepted for the exhibition to give specific information about shipping or delivering art and information on attending the Orcas Island BirdFest.

SHIPPING:

  • Accepted art must be shipped in a reusable box via USPS, UPS or FedEx including PREPAID return shipping labels. Return labels must include a bar code.
  • Shipping artwork in Airfloat or U-LINE boxes is strongly recommended. No peanuts.
  • Shipments from outside the USA much be shipped “FREE DOMICILE” or will not be accepted.

SHOW CALENDAR:

  • Entry deadline March 4, 2015
  • Jury results posted on Juried Art Services April 3, 2015
  • Shipped artwork must be received no later than Monday, April 27, 2015
  • Local artwork received Wednesday, April 29, 2015 from 11 am to 2 pm (or earlier by appointment)
  • Opening reception Thursday, April 30, 2015 from 6-9 pm.
    Exhibition on view with free admission May1- 3 2015, live online sale May 1-31, 2015
  • Local artwork pick up June 1, 2015 from 10 am to 1 pm
  • Returned art shipped the week of June 1, 2015

ARTIST’S AGREEMENT:

Submission of the entry shall serve as an agreement by the artist that all conditions in this prospectus have been met. Orcas Island Chamber of Commerce and the Orcas Island BirdFest and its employees, volunteers and representatives are released and discharged of any and all claims made by damage or loss of the art while in the possession of Orcas Island BirdFest. Each artist must carry their own insurance for shipping damage to and from the exhibit.

Images of selected art may be used for publicity, for educational purposes and on the organizations’ websites at the discretion of the Orcas Island BirdFest committee. No work accepted for the All Things Birds and Beautiful Art Show and Sale may be withdrawn prior to close of the exhibit and online show. Artist’s forfeited privileges in Orcas Island BirdFest shows for two years may be enforced for: 1. Failure to submit an accepted painting, 2. Submission of artwork other than the one that was juried into All Things Birds and Beautiful art show, 3. Submission of a painting already accepted in a previous All Things Birds and Beautiful art show.
