"Commitment to Excellence in Art and Sport:
A Fine Art Competition"

The National Art Museum of Sport (NAMOS), the nation’s premier collection of fine art depicting sport, was founded in 1959 in New York City by the late Germain G. Glidden, a portrait artist and champion squash player. In the years since, NAMOS has carried out a two-pronged mission: to encourage sports artists, and to collect, preserve and share through exhibits the best in sport art. NAMOS has been housed at University Place on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis since 1994 where it viewed by 136,000 people each year. NAMOS, in collaboration with Juried Art Services, is presenting the opportunity for artists to be a part of this collection through the
"Commitment to Excellence in Art and Sport:
A Fine Art Competition" and exhibit.

 

PARAMETERS

Artists: those who have dedicated their lives in the pursuit of interpretive, realistic, narrative art and have created original art celebrating sport. Must be 18 years of age or older.

Awards: Medals and prize money awarded to the top three winners with the opportunity to become part of the permanent collection. An additional $2500.00 prize for "The Germain G. Glidden" founders award for best in show.

Exhibit: Up to 50 pieces chosen by jurors for exhibit at the National Art Museum of Sport in Indianapolis NOVEMBER 2010 TO APRIL 2011. Those chosen are to pay for shipping and insurance to and from the Museum. An additional $10.00 hanging fee applies. Insurance while art is on display at the Museum will be provided by NAMOS.

Jurors: Up to three from the art and sport worlds who have a comprehensive in their view of good art and an understanding of sport.

HOW TO ENTER THE CONTEST:

Entrance fee: Entry limited to two per artist. $50 for one entry, $60 for two non- refundable. For any artist that submits two, only one will be accepted for exhibit. Late fee $70 for one, $80 for two, non-refundable

Payment: This event processes payment directly. You will not be issued a receipt by Juried Art Services. Your application will be marked paid manually by the show. When paying for the application you will be redirected to the event's payment system.

Artwork:

  1. Art must depict or evoke sports, celebrating athletics or the athlete as a subject, whether individual or team, competitive or recreational, participant or spectator, remembered or studied still life, figurative or landscape.
  2. Two or three dimensional
  3. 2D work must be framed or suitable for wall-hanging. 3D work must be suitable for display in a wall case or stand. No constructions or work requiring electricity
  4. Size and weight limitations:
    1. Sculptures: 600 pounds maximum weight, maximum height 45 inches, 18 inches wide, 18-inches deep
    2. Framed works - maximum size 50 inches by 60 inches framed
  5. Must be work produced by the "hand of the artist"
  6. No digital or computer art
  7. Digital photography is accepted
  8. No year restriction as to when executed

Categories:

  • Painting (Oil, Acrylic, Watercolor, or Mixed Media) - may submit two views for entry
  • Sculpture (Bronze, Clay or Composition, Stone, or Wood) -- submit two views for entry
  • Photography

  • Materials used
  • Dimensions, size, weight. etc.
  • Images of work: must be in universal jpg format, between 1400 and 2000 pixels per inch at the largest dimension, at 300 dpi

Submission:

  • The application period for the "Commitment to Excellence in Art and Sport: A Fine Art Competition" opens on April 12, 2010. Submission deadline is midnight EST, October 15, 2010 EST. 
  • Visit the Juried Art Services website to begin the application process as indicated in application process.
  • Artists chosen for the exhibit may choose to set a price for purchase during the exhibit with 30% of the selling price being a contribution to the National Art Museum of Sport, a 501c3 charity.
