Art Sale & Reception
Saturday April 22, 5 to 9 pm


Artists on Location, a plein air painting event, returns to the Knoxville Museum of Art the third week of April 2023. Art collectors and new buyers show strong support for this popular event. Artists have an opportunity to paint outdoors over several days at sites in and around scenic Knoxville, Tennessee. Well-known landmarks will be perfect for interactions with the public, from the Smokies to downtown Market Square. 

On Saturday, April 22, artist's works will be judged for awards and paintings will be available for sale during the Art Sale & Reception from 5 until 9 pm at the Knoxville Museum of Art. 

 Eligibility

Registration is open to professional artists ages 21 and older. All applicants will be juried into the event by an independent juror based on submitted images.

To apply for Artists on Location you must register and pay an application fee online through Juried Art Services.

Artists on Location is limited to 28 artists. Winners of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place from the previous year will be automatically juried into the event. Five slots will be held for artists residing within a 100-mile radius of Knoxville. 

Requirements for Artists on Location a Plein Air Painting Event

●        Mandatory check-in/orientation and canvas stamping

●        Artists must sign up to paint at one predetermined mandatory location

●        Artists will provide their own materials and transportation

●        Artists will provide the title of the painting, medium, location, and price for each piece

●        Artists will hang their art in an assigned space

●        Artists will declare that artwork was produced entirely en plein air, with no photographic or outside assistance

Awards

Up to $3,000 in prize money will be distributed to the winners of the following awards: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and two Honorable Mentions.

Exhibit Space

Artists will receive wall dimensions upon acceptance.

All artwork must fit within the assigned space and may not hang outside of the assigned wall space.

Artists will be responsible for installing their artwork. Artists should bring hardware for hanging art. No drills, please. All artwork must have appropriate wire (no saw tooth hangers) for hanging on the wall and be ready for sale. No lighting from home, please.

Framed and unframed artworks are permitted.  However, unframed art must have at least 1 ½ inch thick gallery-wrapped, edged canvas and with appropriately finished edges.

Competition and Sales

All works submitted for judging must be original and painted during Artists on Location. Artwork is limited to two-dimensional works only – no collage or sculpture.

Artists must submit at least two finished pieces for prize judging. 

All artwork will be judged by the Featured Artist once all art is installed, and awards will be assigned prior to opening the show and sale. Awards will be announced prior to the show. 

One studio piece may be brought to sell, but it must fit within the assigned wall space. Studio pieces may be of any style but must meet framing and size requirements. Those artworks are exempt from awards but must be registered for sales information. 

No artwork is permitted to sit on the floor.

Artists will receive 60% commission of the sale price of all artworks and the Knoxville Museum of Art will retain a 40% commission. This policy pertains to any sales made up to 30 days following the event.

Any commissioned artwork requests resulting from the event will also follow the above fee structure.

In the event that a piece sells prior to 1:00 pm Saturday, it will not hang and is not eligible for judging.

This event is a fundraiser to benefit the Knoxville Museum of Art, a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization.
