The public and collectors are invited to view and purchase the art at the Lighthouse ArtCenter Museum throughout the course of the four-day festival. A juried artists’ orientation and private reception kicks off the festival on Wednesday. Artist’s demos, receptions, a ticketed Patron’s Reception, and workshops take place Thursday through Sunday.

JUDGE FOR THE 3RD ANNUAL PLEIN AIR FESTIVAL Jim McVicker

Jim McVicker is a renowned artist, recently winning the 4th Annual PleinAir Salon Grand Prize, as well as the Southwest Art Award of Excellence and the Franz Bischoff Award for Best Still Life at the California Art Club 103rd Gold Medal Juried Exhibition. His work has been featured in Art & Antiques, Art of California, American Art Collector, American Artist magazines, in the book The Artist and the American Landscape and in the documentary, Jim McVicker – A Way of Seeing.

Born in 1951 in Fontana, California, McVicker says he was “jolted to life by looking at landscape paintings” at the age of 21. By 24, he had committed himself to becoming a full-time artist, moving to the beautiful northern California area of Humboldt County. His plein air landscapes combine his love of the painting process and his deep appreciation of the environment.

McVicker is a self-taught artist. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, he worked along side many painters, including George Van Hook, James B. Moore and Stock Schlueter, painting 12 hours a day, every day for three years. As a young painter he would paint anything outdoors: city street scenes, spectacular forests and rivers, railyards, docks and harbors, along with expansive mountains and Yosemite.

His landscapes, portraits, self-portraits and still lifes are distinctive because of his amazing brushwork, unmixed strokes of pure color, and a powerful sense of light.
