Pairings: Collaborative Works by Two or More Artists is a juried exhibition that presents works created by artists working together. For centuries artists have collaborated, creating new forms, combining materials in radically new ways, or engaging in a rivalry of invention and technique. Picasso and Braque worked together to devise cubism, often using a healthy dose of collage and mundane materials. Robert Rauschenberg collaborated with Merce Cunningham, creating sets, lighting, scenery, and costumes for the Cunningham dance company, which Rauschenberg called his biggest canvas. Pairings will feature collaborative work by 21st-century artists and celebrate the creative acts of multiple contributors.

The juried exhibition will consist of original, collaborative artwork from approximately 50 artists, in the media of book arts, collage, drawing, encaustics, furniture, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. All work must have been created collaboratively, by two or more artists.

About Healdsburg Center for the Arts

Nestled in the heart of Sonoma County Wine Country, Healdsburg Center for the Arts holds the special distinction of being the only art gallery operated by a non-profit organization in the art, food and wine destination town of Healdsburg, California. With a downtown location, supported by a vibrant community of art lovers and a year-round influx of visitors from the San Francisco Bay Area and around the world, Healdsburg Center for the Arts is perfectly poised to present vibrant and innovative art in northern California.

About the Jurors

Susan Cornelis and Suzanne Edminster are northern California artists who work both independently and collaboratively. Over the past several years, Susan and Suzanne have created paintings on canvas together, each beginning a separate work, then moving on to the other artist’s canvas to continue work on that piece. Suzanne and Susan have had two exhibits of their collaborative work: “Four Hands Painting” at the Phantom IV Gallery in Windsor, California, and “The Golden Thread” at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts in Sebastopol. They describe “the golden thread” of their creative connection as “the thread of inspiration which guides these two artist friends on a creative path outside the boundaries of one mind and into the intriguing world of four hands, painting.”
