You are invited to submit work for NBO’s biennial juried exhibition: All Things Considered VIII. This exhibition will be held in conjunction with the NBO July 2015 Biennial Conference at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. It will travel to a second location in the fall.
NBO’s The All Things Considered exhibitions have over the past 15 years become an important record of artistic work being done within the basketry tradition. They are unique in their focus on basketry and in their inclusion of the full range of work being exhibited.
The goal of the exhibition is to showcase benchmarks of excellence in traditional and sculptural basketry that demonstrate superior technique and original concept and design.
In addition to the exhibition itself, NBO will produce a catalog of the show that will serve as an archival document, joining previous catalogs as a continuing record of American basketry. All work in the show will also be included in a gallery of photographs on the NBO website and given exposure in other online media.
Because the photographic record of this work is integral to the archival goal of the exhibition, you are strongly encouraged to send images that display your work to best advantage. The work must merit inclusion in the exhibition and the photograph must merit inclusion in publications. Poorly photographed work will not be acceptable. Unfortunately NBO does not have the resources to accept your work and ask you to re-photograph it for publication. Please see the section on photography guidelines.
NBO encourages both established and emerging artists to submit work.

AWARDS
Best of Show - $400, Best of Traditional Basketry - $200, Best of Sculptural Basketry - $200.
JURYING
Jurors will independently screen all images and make the selection of all work in the exhibition. Entries will be evaluated on concept, design, technique, craftsmanship and creative exploration. Accepted work is subject to final approval by the juror’s representative after the actual work arrives at the Textile Center. Work that differs significantly from the digital image representing it will be ineligible for the exhibition and returned to the artist.
Submission to All Things Considered VIII implies that the artwork represented on the digital images will be, if chosen by the jurors, available for the exhibition and that the artist understands that all accepted work, without exception, must remain for the duration of the exhibition.
JURORS:
JoAnn Kelly Catsos – An award-winning traditional black ash splint basket maker and teacher from western Massachusetts. JoAnn has been teaching basketry at craft schools and conferences for over 25 years. She has won numerous awards, and her baskets are featured in a number of books and magazines, including 500 Baskets. Her baskets are in many private and public collections. She has also received her Certificate of Excellence in Basketmaking: level I from the Handweavers Guild of America. JoAnn is a former NBO board member.
Perry Price - Director of Education, American Craft Council. Perry is responsible for programming and outreach providing leadership and cultivating critical thinking on the field of contemporary craft. Prior to joining the ACC, he served as Curator of Exhibitions and Collections for Fuller Craft Museum (MA). He is a graduate of the Cooperstown Graduate Program in Museum Studies and Johns Hopkins University, and is a scholar of American craft, design, folk and traditional arts, and material culture. His primary area of specialization includes the intersection of traditional means of artistic production with our contemporary lives.
ELIGIBILITY
The exhibition is open to all members of the National Basketry Organization (NBO).
Three pieces may be entered per artist. Works exhibited in previous NBO exhibitions are not eligible.
Work executed under classroom/educational guidance or supervision is not eligible and work must be completed in the last three years (2011 to 2014).
Work may not exceed six feet in any direction and weigh no more than can be handled by two people.
ENTRY PROCEDURE
All submissions need to be filled out through Juried Art Services (www.juriedartservices.com) Follow procedures outlined on site for online submissions. Information needed include the following:
1. Name, address (and shipping address if different), telephone, e-mail.
2. Up to 3 works may be submitted. Each piece should include 1 overall image and 1
detail.
3. Images must be between 1400 pixels and 4000 pixels longest dimension at 300
PPI (pixels per inch).
4. Title of each image per the following: Submission #/Last name/Title (i.e.
1/name/basket title).
5. Include retail price for each work submitted. If not for sale, insurance value must
accompany submission.
6. A brief artist statement about your work.
Entrants will have to register with JAS. There is no registration fee and JAS has support services available.
ELIGIBILITY & ENTRY FEES
Artists must be current members of NBO to submit work for this exhibition. If you are not a current member, you may become a member through www.nationalbasketryorganization.org.
$30 entry fee for all members. Student member – no fee (attach a copy of student ID from a accredited educational institution). Payment required by Paypal or credit card through Juried Art Services online entry.
PRESENTATION OF WORK
All accepted entries must be received ready to install. If work requires specific hanging device(s), armatures or special installation instructions, these must be included along with instructions for installation. All work must remain on display until the conclusion of the exhibit.
SHIPPING
Shipping instructions will be sent with the acceptance notification. Work should be packed very well and shipped in a reusable container. Artists are responsible for the cost of sending and the return shipping of their work and for insurance during transit. Valid credit card information is required to guarantee return shipping. NO hand delivery or hand pick-up of work will be allowed. No exceptions. Any entry that cannot be returned due to invalid or expired credit card number, incorrect address, etc., will become the property of NBO.
SALES
Please note that price of an accepted entry may not be changed after it is set. Artists will receive 50% of any proceeds from either site. The remaining 50% will be split between NBO and the hosting sites.
LIABILITY
Exhibit pieces will be fully insured from time of receipt at The Grand Hand to the time of return shipment from Fruitlands Museum for the insurance value indicated on the entry form. Exhibit pieces will be insured against all risks of physical loss or damage from any external cause while pieces are on location during the period of loan.
Artists are responsible for insurance during all shipping to the exhibition and during the return shipment. During shipment, the insurance regulations of the shipping company will be in effect. The artist must provide any additional insurance during transit.
Fruitlands Museum will provide full insurance coverage for all work during transit from Minnesota to Massachusetts.
SHIPPING OF SOLD PIECES
The artist is responsible for the cost of shipping sold pieces to buyers after the exhibition and for the cost of insurance during this shipping.
Photographic guidelines:
The most common error in images is background. Backgrounds should be neutral. Many artists use a graded black to white background. Under no circumstances should the background contain a color or a pattern. This distracts from your work. If you are doing your own photography and use a sheet or tablecloth as a background you should manipulate the background in Photoshop or other similar program.
The internet abounds with articles on photographing your own work. A professional photographer is always a good investment.
Your piece should not fill the whole frame and it should be centered. Leave enough space around the piece to give a sense of its proportions. Also, the angle of the shot should include enough of the inside of a vessel to show that it is a vessel. Your photographs should give a sense of how your piece “sits” or “hangs.”
Detail photographs are important in demonstrating the technical excellence of the work and to highlight a detail that might not appear obvious in the photograph of the whole piece.
