Eligibility
An applicant to the Festival of the Masters must be a primary award winner in a recognized juried art show/festival/fair during the last four years. A "Primary Award" shall be defined as one of the following:

A. Best of Show
B. First, Second, or Third Place
C. Any award equal to First, Second, or Third Place regardless of show committee nomenclature.

If the show uses terminology other than First, Second, or Third place, please include an outline of the prize structure. An art show/festival shall be defined as: a scheduled and advertised public display and sales event, where juried, accepted or invited artists personally maintain temporary exhibit space for display of their own original work for sale to the public, and compete for awards. Online contests or competitions are not considered a qualifying show. The Primary Award used for verification must be in the same category in which the applicant is applying. If the Primary Award was in a category that Festival of the Masters does not have, the applicant may select the best category that applies to the award winning body of work. An Emerging Masters Award from the 2013 Festival of the Masters will also count as an eligible award for the 2014 Festival. Please complete the section of the application indicating the title of your award, the date it was received, the Festival Contact and email or Festival website. Please make every effort to supply the information requested, as your images will not be juried without verification. If unsure, please confirm eligibility with the Festival Committee prior to submitting your application.

The Festival Committee reserves the right to refuse submission of any application at their discretion.

Previous Festival Award Winners
The Best of Show, Best of Category, Award of Excellence and Award of Distinction Winners of the 2013 Festival are automatically invited to return and are exempt from the jury process in their winning category only. These winners will be accepted upon receipt of their completed application prior to the deadline of July 9, 2014. The 2013 winners applying in a new category are not exempt from the jury process and must follow all of the application procedures as outlined in the section, "Application" below and provide award verification for the new category.

Emerging Masters Program
Returning to Festival of the Masters is an exciting addition entitled Emerging Masters. If you have ever wanted to participate in our annual event but have been unable to meet our primary award requirements, this may be your chance! Selected applicants will be given the opportunity to have their work displayed throughout DOWNTOWN DISNEY® Marketplace and will be in contention for awards as well as potential eligibility for the Masters portion of the event in coming years. Take advantage to be part of this prestigious art show!

This program is open to any artist that has not participated in the Festival of the Masters within the last four years but has participated in another recognized juried art festival (as outlined above in 'Eligibility') in the past four years. This will be a separately juried category, and if an artist applies in this category, they may not apply for any other category in the show. Application details are the same with the exception of the award verification. In this category no proof of award will need to be provided. In the “Award Verification” box please list your category (medium) as well as contact information for the juried art show in which you have participated within the last four years. If participation in another juried art show cannot be verified your application will not move to the jury.

Artists accepted into the Emerging Masters program will follow the same rules and regulations as outlined below. This section of the show will take place at Downtown Disney® Marketplace. Awards will be presented on Sunday, November 9, 2014. The awards given will count as a primary award making you eligible to apply to the 2015 Festival of the Masters.

International Applicants
Festival of the Masters does allow international applicants. Anyone who wishes to apply to Festival of the Masters that is not a current resident or citizen of the United States will need to provide, upon acceptance into the Festival, a copy of a valid Passport as well as a copy of a valid I-94 (arrival/departure record). The passport should be valid for at least 6 months from the date of the Festival of the Masters and the I-94 must be valid and issued in the proper status.

Application
*Application Process: Each exhibiting artist must complete an online application with only one artist per entry, unless you are entering as collaborating artists. A separate online application must be completed for each medium you would like to apply for. Each application must include its own set of images. Completed applications (with images) must be received by July 9, 2014 to be considered. Incomplete applications will not be forwarded to the jury for review. The Festival reserves the right to reassign an artists’ category if artist’s designation is deemed inappropriate. All efforts to communicate the change to the artist will be made.

*Digital Images: Six (6) images are to be submitted for each individual media category entered by the artist. Five (5) images must be of individual pieces of work. Each image must be of a work created no earlier than 2010. Images dated prior to 2010 will not be allowed into jury. Image number 6 must be of a display of the artist’s work, showing the overall continuity and presentation of your current body of work. The sixth image is mandatory. The purpose of the exhibit image is to ensure the artist has a complete body of work which is represented both in the first 5 images and also within image number 6. It also helps identify the scale of the artist’s work as well as type of display intended at the event. On the application, please include the following information for each image: title of work, materials used, dimensions, and year created. Size and format of images must follow JAS website policies.

NOTE: This is a blind jury process! There should be no identifying names or people in any of your images. No text should be in the image unless it is an integral part of the artwork. An artist signature on a submitted piece of artwork may not be visible in a way that a juror may recognize specific artist by his/her name. Any images containing a name will be required to be changed or fixed in the application. If an image is not correct prior to jury it will be removed.

*Special Applications:

Collaborating Artists: No more than (2) two artists (not a business manager, spouse, assistant, employee or other support staff) working as a team may collaborate in the design and creation of any art work submitted for application. A detailed description of each artists’s involvement in the creation of the artwork must be in the Artist Statement, which is part of the application. Both artists’ names must be listed in the application. Both artists’ names must be on/ attached to the Primary Award used for verification. If selected, BOTH artists MUST attend the Festival to represent their artwork and will be required to sign in and present photo identification prior to setting up. BOTH artists must be present at all times during the three-day Festival. All artwork displayed must bear the signature of each artist

Multiple applications: If an artist wishes to apply in more than one category a separate application form, jury fee, and set of images must be submitted for each category. Each work must be substantially different in medium and technique. Artists may not apply twice in the same category. One (1) category displayed per booth.

Application and Participation Fees
In order to be considered during the jury process, application fees must be received by July 9th.

Jury Process
All exhibitor entrants must submit images for the Jury's review. The images are the basis used by the Jury in selecting exhibitors for the available spaces. A preview of each category will be projected on a screen. After the preview jurors will do their individual judging at separate computers. Images are displayed simultaneously with the option of enlarging images and reading the image descriptions. This is a blind jury process. Artists are scored on a scale of 1 (low) to 7 (high), and given a score of the combined points from each juror. Decisions of the Jury are final. Final scores will not be posted or provided to Artists.

The Festival of the Masters Jury is a panel of experienced art professionals from the community with diverse backgrounds.

Artists may display work only in the categories in which their work has been accepted. All work exhibited must be comparable to work shown in the digital images. Any work which is not comparable is subject to removal by the Festival Committee.

Originality of Work for Judging

Work displayed on the walls of the exhibit space must be "original works of art" completed in 2010 or later. Fifty percent (50%) of the original work to be exhibited must have been completed within the past year. Browse Bin reproductions of the artist’s original work will not be considered for judging. "Original Work" means no copies, reproductions or facsimiles of any type. Copies from the works of masters, advertisements, and widely circulated photographs are not considered original works of art and may not be displayed or sold. All work must be solely that of the displaying artist(s). Jointly created works will be permitted only as explained in "Exhibits." All work must be signed by the artist(s).

For the purposes of judging, no machine reproductions of any kind of the artist's work - photo offset, letterpress, photocopy, or gravure - are permitted. No mass reproduction of any work is allowed in combination with original, handcrafted work. Production artwork in any category is prohibited.

Only artists displaying their own original work may participate. No stand-in or proxy exhibitors will be allowed to represent the artist. Festival Committee members will be checking in periodically to ensure the Artist is present.

Browse Bin Rules

Unframed, matted original work may be shown in your browse bin. Signed and numbered limited editions will be limited to 250 or less. All reproductions must be marked as such. Your browse bin may not take up more than 15 % of your exhibit space.

Categories
Review the categories carefully and select the one that best describes your body of work. You may apply in a maximum of two categories. Separate application, jury fee, and images are required for each category. Each category is evaluated separately. Each category must be displayed in a separate booth.

For editions in photography and printmaking process such as etching, intaglio, woodcut, lithograph, serigraph, etc., where each copy of the edition is considered an original, one copy from the edition can be considered for an award if chosen by a judge. However, only a signed original painting or watercolor will be considered for judging, not giclées, photomechanical or digital reproductions of that work. No reproductions can be shown on the walls of the exhibit space. They must be contained to the browse bin.

Unacceptable: Nudity or a suggestion of, novelty crafts, crocheting, knitting, millinery, art supplies, picture frames, velvet painting, caricature, decoupage, commercial photography, coin jewelry, fork/spoon jewelry, wire jewelry, mass-produced jewelry, woven jewelry, manufactured belts, children’s clothing or any clothing created with commercial fabrics, manufactured bags, decorated eggs, folk art, and non-original or kit work. **If you feel that your work fits in the category descriptions for the show; please contact the Festival Committee prior to submitting your application as the application fee will not be refunded if your work is deemed ineligible.

These category rules will be strictly adhered to; please read carefully those rules that apply to the categories you enter.

IMPORTANT: All work must be original, signed by the Artist(s) and produced using archival materials and limited to 250 in its editions.

CLAY

All original clay work is acceptable in this category (wheel-thrown, slab, hand-manipulated, etc). No clay work that is slip-cast in a mold, machine-made or mass-produced is permitted.

DIGITAL ART

Original work created using a computer and printed with archival quality materials. Accepted in this category are scanned and/or imported images of the artist’s original work that have been significantly manipulated or enhanced into the final piece. Original works in this category must be artwork that could not have been created without digital technology. All digital images printed must be signed and limited to a numbered edition of no more than 250, inclusive of size or format. Digital Artists are required to disclose both their creative and printing process. Browse Bin Rules apply.

DRAWING, PRINTMAKING AND GRAPHICS

Original, two-dimensional work including pencil, charcoal, chalk, pastel, wax crayon, inks, and washes is permitted. Printmaking: Prints manually created by the artist using plates, stones, or screens, which have been signed and limited to a numbered edition of no more than 250, inclusive of size or format. Printmakers are required to disclose both their creative and printmaking processes. Browse Bin Rules apply.

GLASS

All original hand-blown or flat glass is acceptable. No glass made from molds or made by production methods, even if it has original decorations on it, is acceptable.

JEWELRY

Original work created without commercial casts, molds, or use of a production studio. Jewelry strung or woven with commercial beads will not be considered. All jewelry, whether produced from metal, glass, clay, fiber, or other materials must apply in this category. Unless you are selected in this category, no jewelry may be displayed or sold in your booth.

LEATHER, FIBER AND PAPER

In this category, “original work” means no copies or reproductions made by machine. No machine tooling, machine-screened patterns, molds or miscellaneous forms of mass production are permitted. Artists in this category may exhibit in only one medium. Browse Bin Rules apply.

MIXED MEDIA AND COLLAGE

Original work of two or three dimensions in which the primary intent is the combination and union of two or more media or physical materials. Browse Bin Rules apply.

PAINTING

Oils, acrylics, alkyd, casein, egg tempera – these must be original works of art. Please have your paintings appropriately framed for exhibition. Browse Bin Rules apply.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Prints or transparencies must be from your original negatives or digital files that you have processed or directly supervised by a reliable, quality service and printed on archival quality materials. All images printed must be signed and limited to a numbered edition of no more than 250, inclusive of size or format. Photographers are required to disclose both their creative and printing process. Photographers who substantially use digital manipulation should consider applying in Digital Art. Browse Bin Rules apply.

SCULPTURE

Three-dimensional original work done in any medium will be considered in this category. Built-up wood will be considered sculpture.

WATERCOLOR

These must be original works of art. Please have work appropriately framed and glazed for exhibition. Mixed media will be accepted only if your work is primarily in this category. Browse Bin Rules apply.

WOOD

Original works in wood that are hand-tooled, machine-worked, turned or carved are accepted in the wood category.

Judging

Judging will be Friday, November 7, 2014, between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Artists must be with their work to be eligible for awards, and in the case of a collaboration, both artists must be present. Spouses, Associates or Assistants may not stand in on the Artist’s behalf.

Judges for the Festival of the Masters are selected on the basis of their overall knowledge and their areas of individual expertise. Our goal is to bring together a compatible team in tune with the philosophy and purpose of an outdoor festival presenting diverse works. Over the years, the Festival of the Masters has called upon many artists, art educators, curators, art experts and luminaries to serve as judges.

Judging will be on the artist’s entire body of work, including presentation. All judging will take place inside of the Artist’s Exhibit.

Festival of the Masters awards will be presented on Saturday Morning, November 8, 2014.
Emerging Masters awards will be presented on Sunday Morning, November 9, 2014.

Exhibits

Each exhibitor must display an exhibit card provided by the Festival staff in the upper right hand corner of the exterior of the exhibit. This card will show name, home town, category, and space number. Artist's biographical information and/or business cards may also be displayed. No other cards, ribbons, catalogues, brochures, fliers, or publicity may be displayed. Ribbons and awards from other shows may not be displayed at any time. Identification will be provided and must be worn during the Festival by all the participants.

Artist Statement: All artists are required to display an artist statement no larger than 8.5” by 11” in a prominent location within their exhibit. The artist statement should include the following:

  • Picture of the Artist(s)
  • Description of methods and materials used
  • If a team, collaboration must be explained

Each exhibitor must provide a display exhibit and racks or tables for his or her work to be properly displayed outside. Rain and/or wind are always a possibility in Florida. It's wise to be prepared with rain covers and appropriate tie-downs. In accordance with Reedy Creek Improvement District Fire Codes, weights for your exhibit will be provided by the Festival staff and no other type of weight will be permitted. Appropriate tie-downs for the weights need to be provided by the artists; bungee cords will not be accepted. No staking will be permitted. Each exhibit is limited to 100 sq. ft. (10x10), and all work will be limited to this space.

Exhibitors must be show-ready by 9:30 a.m. each day and remain in place until 5:30 p.m., with the exception of Sunday when the show will close at 5:00 p.m. Exhibitors who begin to break down their exhibits or depart before 5:00 p.m. on Sunday will not be considered in the future. Please do not apply if you cannot stay until closing time on all three days.

An opaque covering must cover all storage materials. Please note in fairness to all exhibitors, electrical power cannot be provided and plugging into any existing structural power sources is strictly prohibited. No generators or batteries larger than D-cell alkaline will be permitted. In accordance with Reedy Creek Improvement District Fire Codes, there must be a fire extinguisher in every fourth tent at the Festival. Please be advised that your exhibit tent may contain this fire extinguisher kit. Any questions or concerns may be addressed with a Festival staff member during your load in.

During the Festival, all exhibits will be visited by a committee member to ensure compliance for both exhibit regulations and originality of work for judging.

No Show Policy
If you have not checked in or called to cancel by 9:00am on Friday, November 7, 2014 you will be considered a No Show. Your space will be forfeited and no refunds or credits will be issued.
