About the Three Jurors

Dan Biferie

Dan Biferie is Chair of the School of Photography at Daytona State College and a Senior Professor at the Southeast Center for Photographic Studies in Daytona Beach, Florida. Biferie was the Founding Director of the Daytona Beach Community College Gallery of Fine Arts and organized more than 500 exhibitions, lectures, workshops and seminars during his twelve-year tenure. The gallery received national attention and was awarded state and federal grants. Biferie was instrumental in the creation of the Southeast Museum of Photography.

Biferie earned both a Master of Fine Arts Degree and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Ohio University. He is an active artist and has displayed his photographs in more than 150 different exhibitions nationally, including 20 one-person shows. His works have been widely published and are represented in major public collections including the National Museum of American Art, Washington, DC; The New Orleans Museum of Art; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta; and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris.

Clyde Butcher

Clyde Butcher is an award winning large-format view camera photographer well known for his black and white landscape photographs and, in particular, his photographs of the Florida Everglades and Big Cypress National Preserve. Among the many awards he has received is the Hall of Fame Award, which is the highest honor the State of Florida can give to a private citizen. He has received the Distinguished Artist Award from the Florida House Embassy in Washington, DC; the Lifetime Achievement Award from the North American Nature Photography Association and the Ansel Adams Conservation Award from the Sierra Club.

Butcher is a graduate in architecture from the University of California Polytechnic at San Luis Obispo. His interests in spatial relationships, and presentation of architectural designs led him into the field of photography. He had been photographing architectural models for several years when he visited Ansel Adams' gallery in Yosemite. The beauty of Ansel Adams was a major influence in his early photographic experiences. It is from these early formal interests that he became attracted to Western landscapes.

After moving to Florida in the 1980s, Butcher stopped at a roadside attraction, which included a swamp boardwalk for visitors to enjoy. Walking over it gave Butcher his first true wetlands encounter. From the experience he discovered Florida’s natural beauty is found through personal and up-close encounters with nature. He came away from the boardwalk with a new appreciation for wetlands and the understanding that the beauty and grandeur of Florida is revealed when one is immersed in the landscape. His realization came in startling contrast to his experience in the American West where the beauty of nature is most seen from a great distance and with the wide vistas provided by monumental mountain ranges, meandering valleys and expansive deserts.

Butcher’s photographs have changed perceptions and fostered appreciation for Florida’s natural treasures. In addition to his photography, Butcher also shares his appreciation for the wetlands by organizing swamp walks that he fondly refers to as “muck-abouts.” His swamp walks have given thousands of people the opportunity to experience Florida wetlands “Clyde Butcher Style.”

Frederick S. Voss

Frederick Voss is a Museum Consultant and retired Smithsonian Senior Historian and Curator. His work at the Smithsonian included conceiving and organizing exhibitions around historical themes and authoring catalogues and books in connection with the exhibitions. Voss served on the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery staff from 1971 until his retirement in 2004.

For nineteen years, Voss was Curator of the National Portrait Gallery’s vast TIME Collection. The collection began with a gift of some eight-hundred works of original portraiture that appeared on the cover of TIME Magazine. Voss held the Curator position while continuing to serve as Senior Historian. He authored two books on the TIME Collection, Faces of TIME: 75 Years of TIME Magazine Cover Portraits (New York: Little Brown and Company, 1998) and Man of the Year: A TIME Honored Tradition (London: Booth-Clibborn Editions, c1987). By the time Voss retired from the Smithsonian, the TIME Collection had grown to some two-thousand objects.

Other publications Voss authored for the Smithsonian include Picturing Hemingway: A Writer in His Time (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1999), Portraits of the Presidents (New York, Rizzoli International Publications, 2000), and Women of Our Time (London: Merrell Publishers Ltd, 2002). Voss earned a Master of Arts Degree in American History from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Note to Beginning Photographers

Camera USA is a competition open to photographers of all skill levels and experience. It is a very competitive program and not every photographer who enters Camera USA will have his or her work accepted for the exhibition. If your photograph is accepted, you should be prepared to print, frame and hand deliver or ship your photograph for the exhibition. Have you already printed and framed your photograph? If not, please consider making a test print and checking your image for quality at the size you are proposing for the exhibition. Next, get one or more estimates for framing your photograph so you are aware of the cost of framing before you set a selling price for your work. Finally, check shipping rates for sending your photograph to and from zip code 34108 in Naples, Florida by calling FedEx or going to their website at https://www.fedex.com/ratefinder/home?link=4&cc=US&language=en .

Art buyers are generally most interested in photographs that are signed by the photographer and printed as part of a limited edition. Consider printing your photograph as an edition and number each print near your signature. Edition numbers are written like fractions with the total number of the edition as the denominator and the number of the print as the numerator. Prints from smaller editions generally sell for a higher price than prints from large or unlimited editions. An edition of no more than 20 photographs is preferable to a larger edition.

Waiver
Due care will be taken with all photographs. However, the Naples Art Association will not be held responsible for loss or damage to exhibited photographs. The Naples Art Association recommends Camera USA Exhibition participants acquire insurance to cover loss or damage.
