The Society of Arts and Crafts

2014 Artist Awards

CALL FOR ENTRIES

Mission

Established in 1897, The Society of Arts and Crafts (SAC) is the oldest non-profit craft organization in the United States. We support the creation and advancement of contemporary craft. Our exhibition, education and award programs promote emerging through established artists from across the country. SAC’s Newbury Street location includes a street-level retail store and a second floor exhibition gallery that carries out four curated shows per year. We also present Craftboston, an exhibition and sale of contemporary art, craft and design.

Artist Awards

Initiated in 1994, the Artist Awards encourage and support the work of New England craft artists who demonstrate a mastery of their media and create original and innovative work. A panel of jurors will select three artists to receive a $3,000 cash award; winners will participate in a group exhibition at SAC's Newbury Street gallery from May 2 – July 19, 2014. The Awards are named in memory of Ellen D. Grossman and John D. Mineck and in honor of Stewart W. Thomson – all past Presidents of SAC’s Board of Trustees.

Eligibility

The awards are open to craft artists working in clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood, or mixed media. The Mineck award is restricted to a wood or furniture artist – the other two awards are not media specific. Artists must reside in New England (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Vermont). Proof of residency will be required from each award winner. Students enrolled in a full-time art study program and past SAC Artist Awards recipients are not eligible.

Jurors

Dale Broholm - Senior Critic, Department of Furniture Design at Rhode Island School of Design and Studio Furniture Maker.

Janet Koplos - Freelance critic and co-author of "Makers: A History of American Studio Craft" (University of NC Press, 2010).
