CALL FOR ART

Awards: $300 Best of Show $150 Award of Excellence

The Encaustic Art Institute is presenting a National Juried Encaustic/Wax Exhibition. Artists working in encaustic/wax are encouraged to apply. This Exhibition is a National Exhibition, open to all encaustic/wax artists whether they are a member of the Encaustic Art Institute or not. However, any artist that is a member of the Encaustic Art Institute and resides in Canada or Mexico are eligible to enter. Artists may enter up to 3 images per entry for jury review. Only one (1) piece per artist may be selected for the exhibition.

JUROR - MICHAEL KESSLER

We are honored to have Michael Kessler as juror. He started working with wax back in 1975. Michael Kessler has been making and exhibiting paintings throughout the US and Europe for thirty five years. His paintings have been shown in over 250 exhibitions in USA and Europe. His work is included in over twenty five museum collections, including the Broad Foundation in LA, The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York, New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City, The Brooklyn Museum, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and The Philadelphia Museum of Art. He has been the recipient of numerous awards including The Whitney Museum of American Art's Independent Study Program (1977), The Rome Prize (1990), The Pollock-Krasner Award (1992), The Awards in the Visual Arts-Five (1985), and The Pennsylvania Council On the Arts (1983). His heavily-layered, innovative approach to painting has evolved over forty years and includes many unusual painting tools such as metal and plastic trowels and squeegees. He is known for his use of a wide variety of unorthodox application methods such as pouring, scraping, masking, tearing, sanding, gouging, and troweling, His work defies categorization as it incorporates a diverse range of cultural and natural influences as well as divergent art-historical references. Mr. Kessler is originally from Pennsylvania but currently lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
