2014 NCECA Emerging Artists CALL for Applications
NCECA’s Emerging Artists program recognizes exceptional early career artists through a monetary award, and the opportunity to present their work to an international audience during NCECA’s Annual Conference. The monetary awards as well as opportunities for increased exposure through exhibition and special events are made possible in part through the generous support of the Windgate Charitable Foundation. 2014 is the final in a three-year funding cycle and thanks to the foundation’s generosity NCECA’s six Emerging Artists will once again receive a cash award, have their work presented in an exhibition, and receive further publicity through print and web-based media. Selected artists will also present a gallery talk, serve on a topical discussion panel, attend meet-and-greet events with collectors and deliver a formal presentation at the Milwaukee conference.

ARTS/INDUSTRY EMERGING ARTISTS RESIDENCY
The John Michael Kohler Arts Center’s Arts/Industry program marks its 40th anniversary, concurrently with NCECA’s 48th annual conference in Milwaukee. In addition to remarkable pre- and post-conference events, NCECA’s friends at the Arts Center have chosen to mark this milestone by partnering with NCECA to offer a 2-3 month ceramics residency for one 2014 NCECA Emerging Artist applicant. What better way to celebrate than to bring our organizations together and create this amazing opportunity for the best and brightest new voices in our field!
All 2014 NCECA Emerging Artist applicants are eligible. Submission details for this John Michael Kohler Arts Center Arts/Industry residency opportunity are listed below. Those with interest must indicate on the application form if they want to be considered for this opportunity. A 250-word (or less) project proposal will be required. The Arts Center will make the final selection and their process is independent of NCECA's Emerging Artist selections. This means that the Arts Center may select an individual not recognized as one of NCECA’s Emerging Artists for the Arts/Industry residency.
The Arts Center will provide housing, studio space with 24-hour access, materials, firing, technical assistance and a modest weekly stipend for food. NCECA will provide up to $1500 to defer costs for traveling and shipping expenses. We’re so happy to have the John Michael Kohler Arts Center on board for this partnership during their milestone year and our 2014 Milwaukee conference. This will be a golden opportunity for our NCECA Emerging Artist applicants!
The John Michael Kohler Arts Center has sole discretion in the selection of a suitable candidate and scheduling for the Arts/Industry residency. If unable to identify a suitable candidate for the opportunity, the Arts Center may choose to not offer the residency. If an applicant is selected for participation, he/she will be required to work in the factory Monday-Friday, 8:30-11:30am during tours and present one public outreach presentation/month.
ELIGIBILITY:
NCECA defines an Emerging Artist to be one who is creating work that offers new/exciting/thoughtful perspectives that expand upon a genre of creative production and inquiry. An Emerging Artist may be at the early stages of receiving recognition for his/her work but is currently underrepresented through exhibitions or publications that might otherwise bring the work to wide attention. The intent of the award is to recognize, cultivate and amplify vital, new voices of creative endeavor in ceramics. The award enables these artists to reach broader national and international audiences and impact discourse in the field.
Because the concept of emergence in the arts does not invariably correlate with a specific age, or other quantifiable terms, NCECA requires applicants to briefly describe why they perceive themselves to be at an emergent point in their careers and how they anticipate the award will impact the trajectory of their endeavors. The review committee, at their discretion, may eliminate candidates that are considered to be beyond “emerging.” Applicants are also required to provide letters of support from two figures in the field who are familiar with their work and drive to create. Letters should provide the selection committee with a sense of confirmation of the candidates’ seriousness of commitment and potential for continued development.
Applications are welcomed from artists working with ceramic materials/processes as a significant component of their work. A current NCECA Membership, at the time of application, is required to be eligible to apply for NCECA’s Emerging Artists. Applicants may not be students. APPLICATION GUIDELINES:
Applications must be submitted electronically through Juried Art Services…link at bottom of the page. Applicants are strongly advised to prepare the following BEFORE starting the online submission process:
1. Artist Statement describing your work and work process - 250 words maximum. (Copy/paste from Word or equivalent to monitor count. Be aware that special characters and type styles may not copy into submission form)
2. Emerging Statement - Statement articulating why you believe you are at an "emerging" point in your career, and how this award will benefit your studio practice- 150 words maximum.
3. The John Michael Kohler Arts Center Arts/Industry Residency Project Proposal – Interested applicants must describe a project they wish to pursue at the Arts Center in 250 words or less. ONLY THOSE INTERESTED IN THE RESIDENCY OPPORTUNITY SHOULD USE THIS FIELD.
4. Resume- Applicants must e-mail a two-page maximum resume and emphasize pertinent professional experience (teaching, residencies, etc.), exhibitions, interactive projects/performances, lectures, collections and publications. 5. EXACTLY 10 IMAGES - Each work submitted must include the following image details:
o Title
o Description – Clay body, materials, decorating and firing methods
o Photo Credit (if artist, type in ARTIST)
o Image #s - Image 1, Image 2, Image 3, etc. up to exactly 10 images.
o Dimensions (inches) H x W x D
o Date of completion
6. Recommender information - for each of the two individuals providing letters of recommendation: Name, Relation to applicant, Phone #, and Email address.
7. Two (2) 1-page letters of recommendation from professionals in the field must be sent directly from the recommender to kate@nceca.net. The Subject line of these emails should be: 2014 Emerging Artist/NAME OF THE ARTIST/Recommendation.
SELECTION:
NCECA’s 2014 Emerging Artists selection committee will consist of Sam Chung (NCECA Director at Large), Josh DeWeese (Assistant Professor - Montana State University), and Jeanne Quinn (Associate Professor - University of Colorado). The committee will select six (6) Emerging Artists. Selected artists will receive a monetary award, complementary registration in NCECA’s 48th Annual Conference in Milwaukee, WI (March 19-22, 2014), and an additional year’s NCECA membership.
Applications are due at midnight (EST), Wednesday, October 2, 2013. The NCECA review committee will reach its decisions before the end of October 2013 after which applicants will be notified. The John Michael Kohler Arts Center will notify their selected resident artist directly in a separate communication.
NCECA AWARDEES - BENEFITS AND REQUIREMENTS:
NCECA will send a formal agreement outlining terms and conditions associated with this honor will be sent to the selected artists soon after jurying is completed. Failure to fulfill any of the terms and/or requirements may result in the negation of the award.
The selected artists will be required to attend the 48th Annual NCECA Conference, participate in special “meet and greet” events with collectors, present gallery talks, serve on an NCECA Connections panel discussion, prepare remarks and make presentations (approximately 10 minutes in duration) during NCECA’s 48th Annual Conference at the Wisconsin Center in Milwaukee from March 19-22, 2014.
Artists selected as 2014 Emerging Artists are required to provide a written summary of their presentation for the NCECA Annual Conference for publication in the NCECA Journal by December 18, 2013. This summary must be accompanied by five 300 dpi images appropriate for print publication. Also required by this date is a 50-word abstract of this submission to be included in the 2014 NCECA Conference Program Guide.
Selected artists’ images and application materials will be retained by NCECA and will be held in the NCECA archives. Images may be used to promote NCECA’s Emerging Artists program and may be posted on NCECA’s website and contributed to a new NCECA image community being developed in cooperation with AccessCeramics. Emerging Artists will be considered conference presenters and will therefore be ineligible for a presenter role or honorarium in the year following the award.
Emerging Artists will also be eligible for a shipping reimbursement to transport work for a featured exhibition at the conference center from March 18-21, 2014. Artists are required to help install/de-install their work, be present periodically during the course of the Emerging Artists Exhibition. Emerging Artists will also be required to participate in individual interviews to be posted in the NCECA/Crafthaus Blog.
NCECA requires each award recipient to provide a reflection on the impact of their award on the development of their work, life and career. This statement must be sent to josh@nceca.net by August 30, 2014 so that comments can be incorporated into a report to the Windgate Charitable Foundation.
NCECA invites awarded Emerging Artists to provide blog posts to NCECA throughout the year of the award. These posts may link to the artists’ own websites or blogs.
