PhotoMidwest: A Seven State Juried Photography Exhibit
Sponsored by the Center for Photography at Madison and
The University of Wisconsin Union Directorate Art Committee

Dates: September 14-October 30, 2012
Entry Deadline: July 25, 2012

Accepted work will be exhibited as part of PhotoMidwest 2012 in the Wisconsin Union Galleries on the University of Wisconsin—Madison campus. The Wisconsin Union Galleries are located in the Memorial Union, the social and cultural center of the university. An opening reception with juror Sam Abell will take place on September 14, 2012 from 7-9 p.m. in the Main Lounge of the Memorial Union. The UW Memorial Union is located at 800 Langdon St. in Madison, Wisconsin.

Juror: Sam Abell is a documentary photographer, instructor and mentor. Working for National Geographic during the 1970’s and 80’s, Abell describes how he “treated assignments like fellowships (and) operated as an independent spirit” seeking the “art of photography.” He resisted the pressure for ever-more impactful photography and found a niche by “mak(ing) my quiet photographs more compelling.” His work for National Geographic is featured in his fine art book, Stay This Moment (1990). Other books include Seeing Gardens (2000), The Photographic Life (2002), and The Life of a Photograph (2008). Sam Abell teaches photography with the Sante Fe Workshops and became a charter member of their Mentor Program in 2009. Extensive outtakes of a 2002 interview with Abell can be found at The Digital Journalist (http://digitaljournalist.org/issue0202/abell_intro.htm).

About CPM, the Wisconsin Union Directorate, and PhotoMidwest 2012

The Center for Photography at Madison was created to promote the photographic arts in Wisconsin. CPM offers monthly interest group meetings and photo critiques, exhibitions, and regional and national guest speakers. The Center also has an extensive offering of classes in photography and the photographic arts.

The Wisconsin Union Directorate Art Committee oversees a student organization dedicated to showcasing the visual arts. The committee selects, installs, and accessibly presents local, national, and international contemporary work in its four gallery spaces in Memorial Union and Union South. The committee collaborates with other organizations to create ancillary programming that recontextualizes standard approaches to the visual arts.

PhotoMidwest is a biennial celebration of the photographic arts. Beginning in 2000, its mission is to showcase both historic and contemporary photography and photographers from the Upper Midwest. This year, PhotoMidwest will run from mid-September through October. The Seven State Juried Exhibition is a central feature, along with dozens of photography exhibits plus lectures and workshops with George deWolfe, Ryszard Horowitz, Kiera L. Faber, S. Gayle Stevens and others.
