2010 Red Hot Party and Auction

The 9th Annual Red Hot Party and Auction will be held on September 11, 2010 at Museum of Glass, featuring live and silent auctions of glass and glass-related experiences; a dazzling live Hot Shop show; fine cuisine and after-dinner entertainment.  Proceeds from Red Hot, the Museum's largest annual fundraiser, benefit education, Hot Shop programs, exhibitions, and the care, study and exhibition of the permanent collection.  At Red Hot 2009, Museum of Glass hosted 340 guests and raised over $600,000 in auction and ticket sales.  Red Hot 2010 promises to be even grander, with a guest count of over 400 and the debut of the 1st Annual Red Hot Juried Auction!

 

Red Hot 2010 Artist Grand Prize - $10,000 prize and one week in the Hot Shop

New/Emerging Artist Award - $5,000 prize and one week in the Hot Shop

People's Choice Artist Award - $2,500 prize

In the spirit of showing off all that glass has to offer, we welcome artworks with a variety of styles, functions, and price points, including intricately detailed jewelry, flamboyant blown vessels, elegant, functional glassware, socially conscious sculpture, and more.  We want to see it all!  Submissions will be evaluated within the following market values:

  • Value of $300-$1,000
  • Value of $1,001 - $5,000
  • Value of $5,001 and above

Up to 75 pieces will be selected from each category for the silent auctions, with up to 39 pieces receiving star treatment in the exhilarating Red Hot Live Auction!  Items from any category are eligible to win either the Red Hot 2010 Artist Grand Prize or the New/Emerging Artist Award and the People's Choice Artist Award.  Enter today for a chance to be a part of the action!

Rules and Requirements

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS & DEADLINE

  • Entry forms and images must be submitted no later than JUNE 2, 2010
  • Artworks must weigh no more than 75 lbs.
  • Artworks must consist of at least 50% glass.
  • Artworks must have been produced after January 1, 2005.
  • Artworks selected for the auction must arrive at Museum of Glass by JULY 16, 2010.  You will be notified by June 18, 2010 if you have been selected.  

Digital Image Requirements

  • All entries must be accompanied by a digital image of an actual object.  Up to five separate images can be entered showing different angles of the same artwork.  Do not send an actual piece to Museum of Glass unless you have been contacted directly by a Museum representative. 
  • Digital images must be a faithful representation of the actual piece in both condition and general appearance.  If an artwork is delivered to Museum of Glass and does not closely resemble the entered image, the Museum has the right to exclude the artwork from the auction and contest and return the piece to the artist.
  • All digital images must be:
    • .jpg or .tif format
    • 300 dpi
    • Sized 5" x 7"

Neutral backgrounds and diffused lighting are preferred, and will aid the jury in assessing artworks.  Images of artworks selected for the auction will become the property of Museum of Glass and are subject to reproduction on Museum of Glass marketing materials, in the auction catalogue and on the MOG website.

 

Packing and Shipping Requirements

  • Artworks should be packed securely in an appropriately-sized box, keeping in mind that it will packed, unpacked, and handled several times in the course of the jurying and auction process.  Secure packing guidelines include:
    • Wrapped in bubble wrap (and preferably closed with blue painter's tape)
    • Packed in a box which allows 3 inches on all sides of the artwork
    • Kept in a secure position with soft foam or packing peanuts
    • Outer box with two inches of foam or packing peanuts on all sides
  • The artist is responsible for any shipping and packing costs for delivery to the Museum.
  • Museum of Glass is not responsible for any damage the piece incurs en route to the Museum. 
  • Museum of Glass is not responsible for picking up auction items and delivering them to the Museum.
  • Artworks can be delivered by a 3rd party shipper (such as UPS or FedEx) or by drop-off at the Museum between 9am and 5pm, Monday thru Friday.

  • Your work will gain invaluable exposure to hundreds of glass collectors and enthusiasts at the auction, in the Red Hot Auction catalogue and on MOG's 2010 Red Hot Party and Auction web page.
  • If chosen for the live auction, you will be offered a complimentary seat to the 2010 Red Hot Party and Auction where you can personally market yourself and your work to a captive audience.  A limited number of seats will be offered to artists who have been selected for the silent auctions on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

Auction Selection and Award Criteria

Works will be juried according to one or more of the following:

  • Skillful use of glass as an art medium
  • Originality, creativity, and innovation
  • Marketability and audience appeal
  • Expression of a narrative or message with the work
  • General aesthetic sensibility

 

Are contributions to the auction tax-deductible?

If selected for the auction, the value of the resources used to produce the artwork is tax-deductible. 

If you are selected to receive an award, any cash winnings should be disclosed as income, but the value of the resources used to produce the artwork are still tax-deductible.  Following the auction, the Museum will provide artists with an acknowledgement letter to be used for tax purposes. (The letter will not include purchaser information if the purchaser requests anonymity.) Museum of Glass is not responsible for tracking resources used to enter the contest.  Please contact your tax preparer for more information.

Museum of Glass trustees, officers, employees, and contract personnel are ineligible to win the Red Hot Artist Grand Prize or the New/Emerging Artist Award, but are still eligible to win the People's Choice Artist Award.
