Surface Design Association

The mission of the Surface Design Association is to increase awareness, understanding and appreciation of textiles in the art and design communities, as well as in the general public. We inspire creativity, encourage innovation and further the rich tradition of the textile arts through publications, exhibitions, conferences and educational opportunities.

A force in the textile field since 1977, the nonprofit Surface Design Association is committed to education on all levels of expertise and interest. Join SDA to stay in touch with trends and innovations in the fiber world. SDA is a resource you can’t do without.

Eligibility

The exhibition is open to all Surface Design Association members 18 years of age or older. Each entry must be original work completed after June 2007 and constructed, printed, dyed or otherwise embellished using any textile technique or process.

Entry Requirements

Registration information is completed online and the piece is sent in with a print out of the information. There is a $25 submission fee to be paid online with registration information.

Awards

$2000 in cash awards and one Surface Design Association Award of Excellence will be given. The judges retain discretion for determining the number of awards. The judges will present awards based on visual interest, craftsmanship, and innovation. Awards will be determined from examination of actual pieces. Award winners will be announced at the conference, listed on the SDA website and in the SDA newsletter.

CD Catalogue

CD Catalogue of the full exhibition will be produced and available for sale at the conference. A CD of the exhibition can be pre-purchased for $15 at the time of registration. If you are attending the conference and have pre-paid for your CD, you can pick it up at the exhibition.

Exhibition Requirements

Participants are invited to submit ONE piece measuring 18"h x 18"w. Send in the actual piece. Do not send slides. All entries will be displayed in the exhibition. Pieces will be installed indoors on structures specifically designed to hang this size of textile.

Submitted entries should meet the following criteria.

All measurements are in inches.

  • Measure 18"h x 18"w as the finished outside dimensions.
  • Labeled with an ID-tag stating the name of the artist and the title of the piece. Attach label with safety pin.
  • Have a 1.5" casing across the top back. The casing should be placed .5" down from the top of the piece and .5" in from each of the edges. The casing should be left open to allow for a wooden slat for hanging. The gallery will supply the wooden slat.

Preparation for Registration

Please have all of the following ready before starting online registration:

Digital snapshot of your piece:

This should be a low resolution file taken from any digital camera that meets the dimensional requirements listed on the registration site. This is to insure that the information submitted on-line is correctly matched to the piece when it arrives.

Please use .jpg format and RGB color format.

Information about the piece:

Title of piece, materials and techniques, sale price (may be listed “not for sale”), insurance value. 50 word max. statement about the inspiration for the piece.

Your information:

Contact information including e-mail address.

Credit card to pay $25 On-Line submission fee and optional pre-pay for CD Catalogue purchases through Pay Pal.

After completing the On-Line Registration form, print off the registration confirmation and include it in your package to ship.
Shipping address will be given with the registration confirmation.

The print button will display at the bottom of the application once you have completed the entire application.

Judges

Jennifer Angus

Jenny received her education at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (BFA) and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (MFA). She is an Associate Professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison and has exhibited her work internationally including Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan and Spain. She has been the recipient of numerous awards including Canada Council, Ontario Arts Council and Wisconsin Arts Board grants. Three of her works are in the permanent collection of the Canadian Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand.

Alice Kettle

Alice Kettle is a contemporary textile/fiber artist based in the UK. She has established a unique area of practice, consistently and on an unparalleled scale She has extended the possibilities of machine embroidery: producing works the size of tapestries, exploiting the textures and effects made possible through the harnessing of a mechanical process to creative ends. She is Research Associate at Manchester Metropolitan University and Honorary Fellow at the University of Winchester. Her work is represented in various public collections.

Shipping the Work

Printed copy of the confirmation page should be included in your package.

Once you have completed the application, scroll to the bottom of the application page and click the link to print confirmation.

Each artist is responsible for shipping and insurance costs to the exhibition site.

Artist’s Agreement

Submitting an entry to this exhibition implies agreement on the part of the artist to all listed conditions. Conditions include permission to photograph work for publicity, catalogue, website and CD reproduction.
