This contest and subsequent exhibition aims to encourage artists and photographers to focus their skill and creativity on the issues facing endangered species and habitats whilst raising funds to support the Center for Great Apes, a sanctuary for orangutans and chimpanzees in need of lifetime care.
Contest
You are invited to enter the 8th annual ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest. This global, juried, online art contest aims to focus attention on the plight of endangered and threatened species/habitats. The challenge is to interpret or reflect ENDANGERED through either
- Celebration of the beauty of endangered/threatened species/habitats
- Illustration of the threats facing endangered species/habitats
Please note – species do not have to be formally listed as endangered in order to be eligible for this contest as long as an element of threat exists.
The Categories for entry are:
Fine Art (including sculpture, jewelry and wearable art)
Fine Art Photography (digital manipulation accepted)
Young Artists (birthdays on or after October 1st, 2001)
We encourage creativity in interpretation and communication of the theme.
We see photography as a form of art and are happy to receive digitally
manipulated photographs.
We regret we cannot accept video or film entries in the contest.

Fine Art and Fine Art Photography
Categories
For Fine Art and Fine Art Photography categories each entry of a single image must be accompanied by a donation of $25 USD that goes directly to the Center for Great Apes https://www.CenterForGreatApes.org. There is no limit on the number of entries that may be made. Do not submit more than one image of the same Artwork.
Cash Prizes totaling $3,250 will be awarded in both the Fine Art and Fine Art Photography categories. First Prize will receive $1,500 USD, Second Prize will receive $1,000 USD and Third Prize will receive $750 USD.
Prizewinners plus an invited selection of other entries of significant merit will be exhibited in Miami December 2nd-5th, 2020 during Art Week. Letters offering places in the exhibition will be posted to the entrant’s Juried Art Services account by October 28th, 2020. Keep checking your Juried Art Services account for updates.
Young Artists Contest
Young Artists with birthdays on or after October 1st, 2001, are encouraged to enter their work in the Young Artists Category. We will accept individual or class/group entries. Please enter jpeg images of your work through the Juried Art Services website checking the category Young Artists. Young Artist entries should be accompanied by a donation of $5 USD for each entry that goes directly to the Center for Great Apes. Please be sure to include your age at 1st October, 2020. Cash prizes totaling $500 USD will be awarded in the Young Artists Contest. First Prize will receive $250 USD, Second Prize will receive $150 USD and Third Prize will receive $100 USD.
Prizewinners plus an invited selection of other entries of significant merit will be exhibited in Miami during Art Week December 2nd - 5th, 2020. Keep checking your Juried Art Services account for updates.
All entries are published on our Facebook page and other social media and on our website at https://www.Art4Apes.com. We will include your name, the title and All Rights Reserved. If you would like your website and social media handles included, please make sure to include them in your Juried Art Services details.
The contest opens 10th December, 2019 and the deadline for submission is 30th September, 2020.
We regret we cannot accept entries from residents of CUBA, IRAN, NORTH KOREA, SUDAN, SYRIA, Puerto Rico, Quebec AND WHERE PROHIBITED by law.

Exhibition
Covid-19 Impact on Exhibition
Planning an exhibition in the Covid-19 era presents significant issues. We hope for the best, but must consider that resurgence of the virus could force last-minute cancellation or strict social distancing severely limiting visitor numbers. We will make a decision mid-summer as to whether the real life exhibition will take place.
The Juried Contest to determine the winners of our $7,000 in prize money will go ahead, closing date 7th October.
We are developing an exciting virtual exhibition to run regardless of the Covid-19 situation. This exhibition will run from November 1 to December 31, 2020. Jury scores (and fit with the theme) will determine the top placed pieces that will get the best positioning. We will be able to feature 100 pieces in the virtual 2-month show rather than the 50 we can accommodate in the real life show. Another great plus is that we will be able to feature EVERY entry as we will reserve an additional 25 places for a “rolling exhibition” so every piece will be featured for at least 5-7 days.
All pieces may be offered for sale (or not depending on preference) and we will be including links to artist websites and bios as well as full details on the piece. All sales are subject to Florida sales tax and a 30% “commission” which will be paid as a donation to the Center for Great Apes. Please read the Terms and Conditions in full either on this website or at https://www.Art4Apes.com. Please bear this in mind when listing the price of your Artwork on the entry form.
We are planning a program of interesting online events to run during the exhibition.
This will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the work of all entrants to the ENDANGERED Fine Art & Photography Contest.
Please note: Entries made after May 31st are not refundable should the physical exhibition not take place. Entries made before May 31st will be refunded providing the artist notifies Lindsey@art4apes by June 30th.

Proceeds
All proceeds from the contest and exhibition support the Center for Great Apes, a 501(c)(3) registered non-profit organization. The Center for Great Apes’ mission is to provide a permanent sanctuary for orangutans and chimpanzees who have been rescued or retired from the entertainment industry, from research, or who are no longer wanted as pets. The Center provides care with dignity in a safe, healthy, and enriching environment for great apes in need of lifetime care. ALL donations, including contest entry fees, go directly to support the Center. We fund our events either through commercial sponsorship or through our own donations.
The Center for Great Apes is solely the beneficiary of the funds from this Contest; it has no role in the organization or management of this contest. The Center for Great Apes cannot be held responsible for any issue relating to this Contest.
Communication
We like to keep in touch with artists supporting this contest and we do this in the following ways:

- Through our Facebook page https://facebook.com/art4apes - we encourage you to “friend” our page. We regularly post as many new entries as we can.
- We send occasional emails to update everyone on progress and news relating to the contest and exhibition plans; you may unsubscribe from these at any time.
- You may email Lindsey@Art4Apes.com at any time with questions. We try to respond promptly.
- You will receive a letter concerning selection of your entry or entries to the exhibition by October 38th, 2020. This will be posted to your account with Juried Art Services. Please remember to check for mail in your JAS account!
- Winners will receive notification by email by 25th October and checks will be mailed on December 1st.
