FASHION
PERFORMANCE

fu·sion —noun 1. the act or process of fusing; the state of being fused. 2. that which is fused; the result of fusing: A ballet production is the fusion of many talents. 3. Politics. A coalition of parties or factions. 4. Physics. Also called nuclear fusion. a thermonuclear reaction in which nuclei of light atoms join to form nuclei of heavier atoms. 5. popular music that is a blend of two styles, esp. a combining of jazz with either rock, classical music, or such ethnic elements as Brazilian or Japanese music. 6. linguistics. the merging of linguistic elements. 7. (of food or cooking) combining usually widely differing ethnic or regional ingredients, styles, or techniques.

As a part of the Surface Design Association’s international textile conference, Off the Grid, SDA will present Textile Fusion: an Interactive
Fashion Performance, on May 30th, 2009 at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. This alternative fashion show will provide an opportunity to exhibit your fabulous textile-inspired garments up-close and in-performance.

Surface Design Association
The mission of the Surface Design Association is to increase awareness, understanding and appreciation of textiles in the art and design communities, as well as in the general public. We inspire creativity, encourage innovation and further the rich tradition of the textile arts through publications, exhibitions, conferences and educational opportunities.

Eligibility
The exhibition is open to all Surface Design Association members 18 years of age or older. Each entry must be
original work completed after February 2007. If you are not currently a member of the Surface Design
Association you can become a member by going to www.surfacedesign.org, filling out the attached form and enclosing a check for membership.

Entry Requirements
There is a $25 entry fee to submit up to 3 pieces for jury.

Jury
Submissions will be juried for entry by the fashion show committee. Selections will be made based on creativity,
thematic relevance, quality and sophistication of design. In addition, the jury will consider suitability for the
performance and availability of models.

Judge for Awards

Jessica Hemmings
Dr Jessica Hemmings was awarded a BFA (Honors) in Textile Design from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1999. She went on to study Comparative Literature (Africa/Asia) at the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies, earning an MA (Distinction) in 2000. Her PhD, awarded by the University of Edinburgh in 2006, will be published by kalliope paperbacks in October of 2008 under the title Yvonne Vera: The Voice of Cloth.

Jessica is a Contributing Editor to Selvedge, Future Materials and Modern Carpets and Textiles magazines. She writes articles and exhibition reviews for publications such as Bloom and Crafts and press material for clothing and lifestyle companies such as Bamford and dosa. She has taught at the Rhode Island School of Design and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and is Programme Leader of Textiles, Fashion and Fibre at the Winchester School of Art.

Awards will be determined from examination of actual pieces. Award winners will be announced at the conference, listed on
the SDA website and in the SDA newsletter.

Preparation for Submission

Please have all of the following ready before starting online submission:
 Digital images of up to three pieces.
 Each entry should include two digital images, one full view and one detail.
 Images should be submitted in a high resolution format suitable for publication. Images should be a width of at least 1400 pixels for landscape images (wide images) and a height of 1400 pixels for portrait images (tall images). Please no larger than 10 MG. Please use .jpg format and RGB color format.


Information about the piece:
Title of piece, garment size, materials and techniques, sale price (may be listed “not for sale”), insurance value, any special considerations about the garment.

 Credit card to pay $25 on-line submission fee through Pay Pal.
 If you are not a SDA member, you will need to join before your entries will be juried. SDA membership can be paid on the SDA website.

DVD
SDA will be producing a DVD of this event. By submitting your work you are agreeing to have your images reproduced
on the DVD which will be sold through SDA.

Artist’s Agreement
Submitting to this exhibition implies agreement on the part of the artist to all listed conditions. Conditions include permission to photograph work for publicity, catalogue, website and video reproduction and sales. While every effort will be made to show pieces in the performance as shown in the slides, the creative director reserves the right to showcase the garments differently to produce a cohesive, and technically feasible production.

Shipping Work
Artist is responsible for all shipping costs and insurance during transit. Details for shipping will be included with acceptance letters.
