Knoxville Museum of Art: Artists on location, A Plein Air Painting Event

The Guild of the Knoxville Museum of Art (KMA) seeks artists to participate in Artists on Location, A Plein Air Painting Event April 26-29, 2017.  Artists in all media have an opportunity to showcase their talents by painting outdoors over several days at sites in and around scenic Knoxville, Tennessee.  Artists will show and sell the resulting work at the Knoxville Museum of Art during Artists on Location, A Plein Air Painting Exhibition, Awards and Sale on Saturday April 29, 2017 6-8:30 pm.  Knoxville’s location in the shadow of the Smokies has inspired artists since the nineteenth century.  Artists on Location encourages artists to take their materials outdoors and respond directly to the area’s natural springtime beauty, and to make their efforts available to buyers who will treasure images of landmarks and locations.

Eligibility -

KMA’s Artists on Location event is open to painters age 17 and older. All entrants will be juried, based on submitted images and the total number of participants will be limited to 50. Application is open until March 20, 2017. 

Awards

Cash and gifts for Best of Show, 2nd and 3rd places, People Choice, several honorable mentions and quick draw prizes will be presented during the exhibition and sale.  Judging will be lead by featured Artist Jim Carson.

 

Promotion and Marketing

Artists on Location, A Plein Air Painting Event will be supported through the KMA and Dogwood Arts Festival websites and to the public through newspapers, TV and social media. 

 

Submission Requirements-

Artists should submit 2 to 4 digital images of plein air paintings made within the past two years should be well photographed and include the name of the painting.    Arrange images in the order in which you would like them to be viewed.  Images must be JPEG format at 300 ppi and sized from 1900 to 4000 pixels on the longest dimension. Refer to the Help menu on the Juried Art Services site. Images must be in JPEG format and may be used for promotion of the event.  

An artist biography (up to 1000 characters) and photo (jpg – at least 6” and 300 ppi) is required.

Notifications will be sent to each applicant via email by March 31, 2017. Artist agreement forms will be emailed following the announcement.   Notification of acceptance will be sent to artists via email after March 31, 2017.  Artist agreement forms and mapped painting locations will be sent for after payment is secured.

Payment Procedures:

A jury fee of $50.00 is due by March 20, 2017.   

Complete the application through Juried Art Services. This site is free to participating artists.  Send payment for the jury fee through https://knoxart.ejoinme.org.

Event Requirements

·         Artists agree to declare artwork was produced during KMA Artists on Location plein air event

·         Artists will create artwork on stamped canvases in and around Knoxville

·         Artists will provide own material and transportation to locations  

·         Completed works must be accompanied with artist name, location where painted and price

·         Installation of artwork will coordinated by KMA curatorial personnel and assistants

·         All artwork for the exhibition must be checked into the KMA no later than 1pm on Saturday April 29.

KMA Artists on Location, a Plein Air Painting  Exhibition, Awards and Sale at 6-8:30pm

 

Competition and Sales

All works must be original and painted en plein air during the KMA Artists on Location event.  All canvas media is permitted for artwork i.e. oils, watercolors, acrylic, as well as new materials and textures

Paintings may not exceed 50 inches in any direction, including frame.  Framed and unframed art works are permitted.  Unframed art must be 1 ½ inch thick edge gallery wrapped canvas and appropriately finished to edges. Artwork must be ready and wired for installation and sale. No saw tooth hangers are permitted.

Artists must submit two (2) finished pieces for prize judging.  Artists may submit additional pieces created during the event and one (1) studio piece for the exhibit and sale.   Studio pieces are exempt from awards. Studio works may be no larger than 16 by 20 inches and fit within assigned wall space of 4 feet by 5 feet in area.  All artworks must be accompanied by name of painting, artists name and price. 

The Knoxville Museum of Art will retain a 40% commission AND artists receive 60% commission of sale price for each piece.  Payments for sold artwork will be sent to 30 days after the event. All artists must submit a completed W-9 form at time of artist check in.

This event is a fundraiser for the Knoxville Museum of Art, a 501(c)(3) non-profit and all proceeds support the KMA’s mission to promote the arts through education and community events.  Art work donated for this event may be tax deductable.

Reception for sponsors and artists

All artists and one guest are invited to a private cocktail reception and plein air painting demonstration Friday evening April 28.

 

Featured Artist and Juror

Jim Carson, Saluda NC, 

We are thrilled to have Jim as the event Featured Artist and Juror for this year’s KMA Artist on Location.   Jim has received a number of awards in both local and national shows, and gives both outdoor and indoor workshops throughout the United States.  Jim is known for his creative color balance and bold and expressive brushwork.  Jim is also a member of Plein Air Painters of the South East (PAP-SE) and an associate member of the Oil Painters of America, and a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society.
