Contemporary Crafts Market

PASADENA CONVENTION CENTER, NOVEMBER 11-13, 2016

The Contemporary Crafts Market is beginning our third season at the Pasadena Convention Center. After 28 years in Santa Monica the closing of the SM Civic Auditorium opened a new era for us in Pasadena. The markets strive to attract affluent buyers looking for well-designed, quality handmade work in all media. The Greater Los Angeles area has a very limited number of indoor, juried craft shows and the public's response to the Contemporary Crafts Markets has been enthusiastic. Our goal in Pasadena is to build on our reputation for high quality shows and to present the best, most highly attended crafts events in the Los Angeles area.

To help promote each show, complimentary color postcards featuring selected exhibitor pieces are provided to exhibitors in any quantity they can use. Our marketing strategy includes free admission to previous customers. Each card admits two people free of charge.

Exit surveys at each show are conducted to measure the effectiveness of the advertising and PR. The addresses of all who attend and are willing to be on our mailing list are collected. The effort pays off: Over 65% of attendees report they came because they received the show post card or were invited by exhibitors or friends. This crafts market family mailing list now numbers over 30,000 homes.

In addition to the direct mail campaign, a year-round public relations effort is managed by Elizabeth Anderson, a Los Angeles area PR firm. Extensive advertising is placed in print, on-line and in electronic media for each show.

Exhibitors from past shows report growth with fairly consistent buying trends: strong high-end and low-end sales with less sales in the mid-range.

Return customers have been the key to increased sales at CCM events. Exhibitors mail invitations to past customers and report that repeat sales (often for larger items) are a big percentage of their volume.
Many exhibitors offer to their repeat customers free admission (using the postcards) and/or purchase discounts.

The Pasadena Convention Center is a recently constructed exhibition hall that will accommodate 230 exhibitors. All booths are inside the building. A large percentage of our loyal customers from the Santa Monica shows have followed us to Pasadena and there is the potential of new customers from this affluent community.

No trade preview is scheduled in Pasadena, but invitations and complimentary admission badges are sent to all firms that resell crafts if they have previously attended any of our markets.

The markets are produced by Roy Helms and Chris Andrews. The promoters have a collective experience of 50 years+ in arts management including three seasons with the American Craft Council's ACC Craftfairs and five years directing the Alaska State Council on the Arts. The shows are managed from their office in Honolulu. Calls for additional information are welcomed.

General Information. The Contemporary Crafts Markets are invitational shows, each featuring the work of up to 230 craftspeople. Exhibitors have reported sales exceeding $40,000 per booth with the average ranging from $6,400 to $9,500 depending on the show.

The Contemporary Crafts Market was first in Pasadena, November, 2013. It is the successor show to the 28 year run in nearby Santa Monica. The show is entirely indoors, held in the Exhibit Hall of the Pasadena Convention Center.

Extensive media campaigns are undertaken with PR materials going to all electronic and print media. The advertising budgets are focused on the newspapers, internet postings, direct mail campaigns, placements in radio and TV and a website where patrons can preview the show and print out complimentary passes. All recent prior customers receive complimentary passes by direct mail. Exhibitors are encouraged to provide free passes to their customers as well.

The Contemporary Crafts Markets are devoted to presenting craftspeople of exceptional quality. All items to be sold must be made in the U.S.A. and cannot be kits or items made from kits. Buy and sell is prohibited. New exhibitors who meet the quality standards of craftsmanship and design in wood, glass, ceramics, jewelry, leather, metal, paper, textiles, and works of art on paper (limited edition prints, photographs and watercolors) can be invited by the sponsors to join the show. The focus is on fine crafts. Paintings on canvas are not accepted.

Full decorator and in-coming drayage services are available. Electricity and booth fixtures are not included in the booth fee. Electricity can be purchased and booth fixtures can be rented as options.

Application. Craftspersons (included previous exhibitors) who wish to apply are asked to provide on line:

(1) Five digital images of their work. If you are applying in more than one category make a separate application and $20 handling fee for each.

(2) Your resume/artist statement.

(3) Complete artist name, business name, mailing address, phone number(s), fax number, email address and website address.

All applications are reviewed at one time following the deadline date. Notification of the results will be by email within 30 days after the jury deadline.
